Itinerary

Day 1 After an early departure we travel via the Dartford Crossing up to Harrogate and our overnight hotel – The Old Swan. Our hotel is close to the centre of Harrogate, so you can have a stroll before dinner to have a look around this pretty town.

Day 2 This morning we follow the route of the Great North Road and complete our journey up to Alnwick, arriving in time for a late lunch in town (not included). This historic market town retains much of its old-world charm, with cobbled streets, preserved market square and plenty of independent shops and cafés to choose from. Later in the afternoon we can check into our hotel and tonight, after dinner, there will be a quiz.

Day 3 We travel up the Northumbria coast, with a stop at the pretty harbour of Seahouses. We then visit Howick Hall Gardens, where we can see two rooms of the Hall, the visitor centre and the beautiful gardens, hopefully awash with daffodils. Enjoy tea and cake in the Earl Grey Tea House before returning to our hotel. This evening, you might like to take part in a game of bingo.

Day 4 This morning we travel north and cross the causeway to Holy Island, home to the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, founded in 635AD, and still an important site for pilgrims interested in its early Christian heritage. The island is also a thriving nature reserve and is renowned as a haven of tranquillity, with remarkable views across the wild coastal landscape. In the afternoon we visit Bamburgh to explore the magnificent castle, which has dominated the rocky plateau for over 1400 years. Before dinner tonight, enjoy a ‘Taste of Northumbria’ – a chance to sample local spirits, beers and liqueurs.

Day 5 After a leisurely breakfast, we visit Cragside, the home of Lord Armstrong, Victorian inventor and landscape genius. The house is famous for being the first home in the world to be powered by hydroelectricity, and is crammed with ingenious gadgets and fascinating artifacts. Tonight, enjoy our final dinner in Alnwick.

Day 6 Departing our hotel, we head southwards via the pretty conservation town of Stamford, reaching the local area in the evening.

White Swan Hotel

This three-star-standard 300-year-old coaching inn, situated right in the heart of Alnwick blends modern amenities with historic charm. The hotel is famous for housing the magnificent panelling, stained-glass windows and staircase from the Titanic’s sister ship. Bedrooms have TV, telephone (in some rooms), WiFi, ironing facilities, hairdryer and hospitality tray. There is no lift, a few ground floor rooms are available, but there are steps throughout.
