We return to the Hotel Rex in the seaside resort of Weymouth, with its beautiful beaches and idyllic leisure harbour, which nestles perfectly alongside the rugged Isle of Portland.
Day 1 We make our way west to Athelhampton House, one of the finest examples of a Tudor Manor House in England. Explore the glorious Great Hall, the Elizabethan gardens and enjoy a light lunch of soup and sandwiches. We continue our journey to Weymouth and our hotel.
Day 2 In the morning we visit Abbotsbury Swannery, the only place in the world where you are able to walk through the heart of a colony of nesting Mute Swans. Established by Benedictine monks in the 1040s, this wonderful habitat on the Dorset coast is home to up to 600 swans, has the largest willow maze in Dorset and is popular with film makers from around the world. The rest of the day is free in Weymouth.
Day 3 In the morning we visit Dorchester, an historic market town with its roots in Roman times and close associations with Thomas Hardy. We visit Max Gate, the atmospheric Victorian home where Hardy wrote about Tess of The d’Urbervilles and much of his poetry. The rest of the day is free in Weymouth, or join your driver on a drive around the Isle of Portland.
Day 4 We leave our hotel after breakfast and travel via Bournemouth with a stop for refreshments. We arrive in the local area in the afternoon.
