Enjoy a relaxing spring visit to the beautiful Kingdom of Northumbria, filled with historic houses and castles, and dramatically beautiful scenery.
Day 1 SUNDAY We travel north to Harrogate for dinner and our overnight stay at the four-star rated Old Swan Hotel.
Day 2 MONDAY This morning we drive north to the popular coastal town of Tynemouth with its long sandy beaches and historic Priory and Castle. We continue in the afternoon to Alnwick for dinner and our fournight stay. After dinner tonight there will be a quiz.
Day 3 TUESDAY A glorious day exploring the Northumbrian coastline today as we cross the causeway to Holy Island, home to the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory. In the afternoon we visit Bamburgh to explore the magnificent castle, which has dominated the rocky plateau for over 1400 years. Before dinner tonight, enjoy a ‘Taste of Northumbria’ – a chance to sample local spirits, beers and liqueurs.
Day 4 WEDNESDAY Perched on the northernmost tip of England; the walled town of Berwick-upon-Tweed serves as a charming gateway between England and Scotland. With Elizabethan Walls and Ramparts encircling the town, and the first purpose-built military barracks in England, Berwick is steeped in history.
Day 5 THURSDAY A visit to Cragside House and Gardens today, an impressive Victorian mansion built for Lord Armstrong and the first house in the world to have electricity. Enjoy the magnificent gardens, lakes and unique Orchard House, all set over 900 acres.
Day 6 FRIDAY Departing our hotel, we head southwards via the pretty conservation town of Stamford, reaching the local area in the evening.
This 300-year-old coaching inn, situated right in the heart of Alnwick blends modern amenities with historic charm. The hotel is famous for housing the magnificent panelling, stained-glass windows and staircase from the Titanic’s sister ship the Olympic. Bedrooms have TV, telephone (in some rooms), Wi-Fi, ironing facilities, hairdryer and hospitality tray. There is no lift, a few ground floor rooms are available, but there are steps throughout.
