Itinerary

Day 1 MONDAY We make our way north, with suitable refreshment stops along the way and arrive at our hotel in Chester in time for dinner.

Day 2 TUESDAY Our first stop is the Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre, nestled in 50 acres of Cheshire countryside. Here, we learn about the vital role Shire horses played in pulling narrowboats along Britain’s canals and meet up to 30 of these gentle giants. In the afternoon, we visit the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port. A guided tour reveals the fascinating history of these 200-year-old docks, which once played a key role in transferring goods from sea to canal.

Day 3 WEDNESDAY We have a leisurely breakfast this morning before we enjoy free time at leisure in Chester. This historic city offers lots to see and do. Explore the unique ‘Rows’ of two-tiered shops or take a stroll around the City Walls. Later, we enjoy a sightseeing boat cruise with commentary about the local area and its history. We return to the hotel in the afternoon for a cream tea.

Day 4 THURSDAY This morning we travel to Port Sunlight where we enjoy a guided tour of Port Sunlight Village. Built by William Hesketh Lever for his factory workers and named after his famous Sunlight soap this is a superb example of how life used to be. Our day concludes with a visit to Ness Botanic Gardens where we discover 64 acres of beautiful gardens with glorious views over the River Dee and North Wales.

Day 5 FRIDAY After breakfast we are homeward bound.
