Day 1 SUNDAY We travel to Cambridgeshire making suitable refreshment stops along the way, arriving at our hotel late afternoon.
Day 2 MONDAY Our day begins at Anglesey Abbey and Gardens (NT). The Jacobean-style house takes us back to the golden age of countryhouse living, and the garden is glorious in September, with glorious dahlia displays and splendid autumn colours in the herbaceous borders. We have a short visit to Cambridge on our return.
Day 3 TUESDAY We travel up to Ely for free time to explore. In the afternoon we visit Wicken Fen (NT), a national nature reserve giving a window into a lost fenland landscape. After an introductory talk, stroll along the boardwalks through areas lush with wetland plants and rich in wildlife.
Day 4 WEDNESDAY A visit to Wimpole (NT), a unique working estate with an impressive 17th-century mansion at its heart, where intimate family rooms contrast with lavish Georgian interiors. Outside we find a vibrant walled kitchen garden, parterre and winding pleasure grounds in acres of ancient parkland.
Day 5 THURSDAY After breakfast we travel home.
