Northumbria’s wealth of natural beauty, rugged coastline and vast landscapes of unspoilt countryside is blessed with wildlife and an abundance of historic sites, including the mysterious and wild Holy Island.
Day 1 SUNDAY After an early departure we travel north towards Newcastle passing Antony Gormley's iconic Angel of the North before arriving at our hotel late afternoon for our 5-night stay.
Day 2 MONDAY This morning we head to the Beamish ‘Living Museum of the North’, where we step back in time and see how people lived and worked in the late 19th and early 20th Century
Day 3 TUESDAY Today we take the road north, past Blyth and Ashington, to Amble, Warkworth and historic Alnwick. We visit the magnificent Alnwick Castle & Gardens, home to the Duke of Northumberland family dating back to 1309. Discover opulent State Rooms filled with a stunning array of art and furniture, visit the museums, or try to spot the filming locations for Downton Abbey and, of course, Harry Potter’s Hogwarts!
Day 4 WEDNESDAY We visit the resort of Seahouses on the North Northumberland Heritage Coast. Offshore lie the remote Farne Islands, home to a wide variety of bird and sea life. We continue to Bamburgh, home of Grace Darling, where the imposing castle looks out to sea. Subject to tidal conditions we travel over the causeway to Lindisfarne (Holy Island), birthplace of British Christianity.
Day 5 THURSDAY This morning we travel to the vibrant market town of Hexham. We then follow the course of Hadrian’s Wall and include a visit to the Roman Army Museum and Vindolanda, where you can see the excavated remains of the Roman fort and town.
Day 6 FRIDAY Departing after breakfast, we travel south by way of the conservation town of Stamford. We reach the local area in the evening.
Our modern four-star hotel is on the outskirts of the city and offers leisure facilities including swimming pool, stream room, sauna and gym. Bedrooms have TV, telephone, Wi-Fi, ironing facilities, safe, hairdryer and hospitality tray. The hotel has a lift.
