Itinerary

Day 1 SUNDAY En-route to our hotel we visit Audley End House, one of England’s grandest stately homes. Equipped with original and reproduction Victorian fixtures and fittings the house creates an atmospheric portrait of daily Victorian life.

Day 2 MONDAY An excursion to Suffolk’s Heritage Coast and the pretty coastal town of Aldeburgh, with its unspoilt beach dotted with fishermen’s huts. We continue to the world-famous Anglo-Saxon burial site of Sutton Hoo. At this beautiful 255-acre estate where one of Britain’s greatest archaeological finds was made in 1939, we can discover the story of the amazing 7th-century ship burial of an Anglo-Saxon king, view the award-winning exhibition and explore the full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber.

Day 3 TUESDAY We enjoy a scenic drive around some of Suffolk’s prettiest pastel-coloured villages, whose timber-framed houses and thatched roofs make this area so unique. Lavenham is one of the most important and best-preserved medieval villages in England with picture postcard tiny streets, independent shops, cafés and restaurants. Our drive also takes us through Sudbury, home to Gainsborough’s townhouse, which is now the birthplace museum and gallery of Gainsborough.

Day 4 WEDNESDAY We venture into the heart of Constable Country and visit Flatford Mill. Here we will find a 16th Century thatched cottage that the artist regularly painted and an exhibition on his life and work. We continue to Beth Chatto Gardens, created by this award-winning plantswoman, where we discover an informal collection of historically significant gardens.

Day 5 THURSDAY Homeward bound, arriving during the afternoon
