We embrace the glittering lakes, picture book towns and soaring mountains of Austria’s Lake District on this wonderful tour. We visit lakeside St Wolfgang, St Gilgen and explore Salzburg, the city of Mozart and the ‘Sound of Music.’
Day 1 SATURDAY We travel to Dover for the short sea crossing to France. We continue through France to Germany and our overnight hotel near Saarbrucken.
Day 2 SUNDAY After breakfast, we continue south, skirting Munich arriving in Kronberg in Austria’s Salzkammergut region for our 5-night stay.
Day 3 MONDAY This morning we board a local coach for the short journey to Lake Attersee. We then enjoy a 50-minute circular cruise of the lake, with lovely views of the surrounding hills. After free time for lunch and a wander we return to our hotel to enjoy a free afternoon making the most of our location and hotel facilities.
Day 4 TUESDAY We travel to St Gilgen via Mondsee, to see the famous Sound of Music church, where we have the chance for a photo stop. In St Gilgen, we have free time to enjoy the Mozart’s village, before boarding our boat to cruise to the lakeside town of St Wolfgang. Here we are free to explore at leisure before we return to our hotel mid-afternoon.
Day 5 WEDNESDAY Travel to the elegant city of Salzburg, the 1756 birthplace of Mozart and setting of the 1965 film, ‘The Sound of Music’. Spread beneath the 11th-century Hohensalzburg Fortress, this Austrian city boasts a shop-filled old town, rich museums and a wealth of Baroque churches and squares.
Day 6 THURSDAY This morning, we visit Bad Ischl including entrance and guided tour of Kaiservilla. An impressive imperial villa, once the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. We enjoy free time in this delightful spa town, gateway to the region’s lakes and mountains and famous for its stunning baroque architecture before travelling onwards to Hallstatt. We will have free time in the pretty village of Hallstatt to explore its 16thcentury Alpine houses and alleyways, with independent shops and cafés dotted around before returning to the hotel.
Day 7 FRIDAY Depart Austria; we travel north into Germany to Kamp Bornhofen for our overnight stay.
Day 8 SATURDAY Departing after breakfast we return through Belgium to Calais/Dunkirk for our crossing to Dover. We return to the local area and take you to your door.
