Itinerary

Day 1 SUNDAY We make our way north, with suitable refreshment stops, to our overnight hotel in Lancashire.

Day 2 MONDAY After breakfast we continue north, entering Scotland at Gretna Green and making a short stop to visit the Old Blacksmiths Shop, where you can see the original wedding room and the famous anvil – the site of runaway marriages since 1753. We continue through the Borders and reach our hotel in New Lanark late afternoon.

Day 3 TUESDAY A free morning in New Lanark to enjoy the facilities at our hotel followed by packed lunch*. We then travel into Edinburgh and visit the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the King’s official residence in Scotland. Explore the Palace’s associations with Mary, Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie, and our own King Charles. We then have some free time to buy a snack before taking our seats in the stands for the 2026 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo ‘A Call to Gather’. After the spectacular show we return to New Lanark.

Day 4 WEDNESDAY A free day for you to enjoy this remarkable World Heritage Site. New Lanark Mill is a unique 18th-century mill village sitting alongside the picturesque River Clyde. This was the work of social pioneer, Robert Owen who provided for his workers decent homes, fair wages, free health care, a new education system and the first workplace nursery school in the world! See recreated millworkers’ houses, historic working machinery and do not miss the lovely walk along the river to the ‘Falls of Clyde’ waterfalls. There is a mill shop selling locally made textiles and a pleasant café, and your ticket includes the Annie McLeod Experience – a journey back through time as mill girl Annie reveals the amazing story of her life and times in New Lanark in 1820.

Day 5 THURSDAY Leaving our hotel after breakfast, we travel down across the border and through the Yorkshire Dales before reaching our hotel in time for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 6 FRIDAY We make our way south via the pretty conservation town of Stamford to the south coast.
