The county of Norfolk offers a rich historical heritage, charming villages, abundant wildlife and varied landscapes, including the famous Broads - a unique and picturesque part of the county. We explore the area on a wonderful heritage trainline, by Mississippi Paddle Boat, by coach on a scenic drive to the coast, and visit both Holkham and Felbrigg Halls and The Thursford Steam Museum.
Day 1 SUNDAY We travel north to the cathedral city of Ely. The town boasts a beautiful cathedral, Thomas Cromwell’s House and pleasant walks along the River Great Ouse. We continue to our hotel near Norwich arriving late afternoon.
Day 2 MONDAY This morning we have a guided tour of Norwich, and the afternoon is free for your own exploration. You could visit the impressive Norman cathedral, Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery.
Day 3 TUESDAY We make our way to Fakenham and the wonderful Thursford Collection. See the wonderful steam engines and mechanical organs, visit the fairground collection and delight in riding on one of the vintage rides (£3 charge per ride - subject to operation) and see the mighty Wurlitzer. We continue to Felbrigg Hall, home to well-preserved interiors and a fascinating collection which is one of the largest in the National Trust. We have access to the 17th-century house and extensive gardens.
Day 4 WEDNESDAY A day out steaming and cruising through the Broads. We travel to Aylsham to join the Bure Valley Railway for the 9- mile nostalgic journey through the Norfolk countryside, ending at Wroxham, the Gateway to The Broads. There is free time to get something to eat before we transfer to Horning to board the Southern Comfort, a Mississippi paddle boat for a 1½-hour cruise, exploring the beautiful network of rivers, lakes and waterways known as The Broads.
Day 5 THURSDAY Today we visit Holkham Hall, a breathtaking 18thcentury house on the coast. The Hall has a fascinating history, an outstanding art collection, and wonderful panoramic landscapes.
Day 6 FRIDAY Leaving after breakfast, we travel via Lavenham, with its many half-timbered buildings dating from the 15th Century. We arrive in the local area late afternoon.
A majestic, Elizabethan-style mansion, built in 1859 and lovingly restored to its former glory, set in 150 acres of beautiful, wooded Norfolk parkland. All bedrooms have TV, telephone, hairdryer, and hospitality tray. Facilities include an indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room. The hotel has Wi-Fi and a lift to most rooms.
