A wonderfully historic area of the UK, where we discover 2nd-century Romans, Scottish poets, whisky and one of our most beautiful lakes by steamer.
Day 1 We travel north, with suitable refreshment stops, arriving at our hotel in Carlisle late afternoon.
Day 2 Today we cross the border and visit Dumfries, where you might like to visit Robert Burns’ House and see how the poet lived (Free entry), enjoy a stroll along the River Nith, or find a café or pub for refreshments. Later we visit Annandale Distillery, famous for its small batch, high quality whisky. We have a tour and receive a small gift to enjoy at home.
Day 3 A morning visit to Birdoswald Roman Fort, a remarkable site on the longest stretch of Hadrian’s Wall still visible. The afternoon is free to explore Carlisle. You could visit the 900-year-old castle (entrance not included), the stunning cathedral or stroll in Bitts Park on the River Eden.
Day 4 Today we drive into the Lake District National Park to take a steamer trip on Lake Ullswater, from Pooley Bridge in the north to Glenridding in the south. We then drive up across Matterdale to Penrith for some free time to explore.
Day 5 Leaving our hotel after breakfast, we return to the south, reaching the local area early evening.
Our three-star hotel stands in the centre of Carlisle and offers a perfect mix of Edwardian grandeur and beautiful original features, including an elegant sweeping staircase. There is a comfortable bar and restaurant, and the hotel has a swimming pool and Jacuzzi. Bedrooms have TV, telephone, WiFi, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities. The hotel has a lift, but there are some steps throughout.
