National Trust Members’ Tour: Our tour to the glorious West Country incorporates four wonderful National Trust properties, as well as showing us the dramatic beauty of Exmoor National Park.
Day 1 A taxi picks you up from home and takes you to your Woods coach, which then travels west with suitable refreshment stops, before continuing to your hotel in mid Devon.
Day 2 Today we begin with Knightshayes (NT), a Gothic Revival house with opulent designs, complemented by a garden which is a masterpiece of architectural planting. Our afternoon visit is to Killerton (NT), a welcoming Georgian house set in a huge estate of working farmland, wooded parkland, cottages and orchards.
Day 3 An excursion into North Devon and Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (NT). The starkly classical exterior of the house hides a hugely varied collection amassed by 11 generations of the Chichester family. The stable block houses the wonderful display of carriages and the gardens have been restored to their Victorian glory. After a short stop in Lynmouth, we return across Exmoor National Park.
Day 4 Our visit is to Barrington Court (NT), a 16th century house rescued from dereliction in the 1920s by Colonel Lyle, of Tate & Lyle fame. The house is unfurnished, but contains beautiful panelling, fireplaces and staircases. The Walled White Garden, Rose and Iris Garden and Lily Garden have playing fountains, vibrant colours and intoxicating scents. We return to our hotel mid-afternoon for free time to explore Tiverton.
Day 5 Departing our hotel after breakfast we travel east and have a stop in Salisbury. We continue to the local area arriving late afternoon.
The three-star Best Western Tiverton Hotel is on the outskirts of Tiverton, an historic market town in the heart of the beautiful Exe River Valley. The hotel has WiFi and bedrooms have TV, telephone, hairdryer and hospitality tray. The hotel does not have a lift but ground floor rooms are available.
