A visit to the English Lake District promises rolling hills, majestic vistas and deep mysterious waters, all from our perfect hotel on the shores of Lake Ullswater.
Day 1 We set off northwards making suitable refreshment stops along the way and reaching Glenridding at the southern end of Ullswater late afternoon, with time to settle into our hotel before dinner.
Day 2 We travel to Grasmere via Thirlmere, and pass Dove Cottage, where William Wordsworth spent his early married life. We pass Rydal Mount, Wordsworth’s last home, and drive through Ambleside, along the shores of Lake Windermere, England’s largest natural lake at 10½ miles long. We continue over the Kirkstone Pass, reaching an altitude of 1489 feet, and crossing the highest pass in the Lake District open to motor traffic. We return to our hotel mid-afternoon.
Day 3 Travelling south following the eastern side of Lake Windermere, we continue to the Victorian station at Haverthwaite, where we board our heritage train for the short journey through the Leven Valley to Lakeside. From here we have a wonderful cruise up the lake, past small islands and secluded bays to Bowness, the largest town in the Lake District National Park. After some free time to relax, we return to our hotel.
Day 4 We spend the day viewing some of the beautiful northern Lake District including Bassenthwaite, and make a stop in the market town of Keswick. We also visit the childhood home of William Wordsworth at Cockermouth. The Romantic poet was born here in 1770, and the house is furnished with period detail, and the garden lovingly restored. Our return journey takes us via Skiddaw Forest.
Day 5 This morning we take a steamer trip on Lake Ullswater – the second largest and possibly most beautiful lake in England. We cruise from Pooley Bridge in the north to Glenridding in the south, docking close to The Inn on The Lake. This afternoon is free to relax at our hotel or stroll along the lakeside.
Day 6 Departing after breakfast, we head southwards to our local area, making suitable refreshment stops along the way.
