Join us on this visit to The Queen’s country retreat – Sandringham, and enjoy visits to Barnsdale Gardens, Boughton House and Stamford, and take a cruise on the Grand Union Canal, all during a time when Norfolk should be awash with lavender.
Day 1 After your taxi pick up, we make our way north to Rockingham, making suitable refreshment stops along the way. We are greeted with tea and biscuits and have time to relax before dinner.
Day 2 We set off around Rutland Water and head for historic Stamford, where we find beautiful architecture, delightful shops, and an abundance of cafés and pubs in which to find some lunch. Our afternoon is spent at Barnsdale Gardens, familiar to many TV viewers as home to the late Geoff Hamilton and Gardeners World. The gardens comprise 37 individual gardens within eight acres.
Day 3 This morning we drive to the little village of Foxton, where we board ‘Vagabond II’, for a cruise on the Grand Union Canal, seeing the Foxton flight of 10 locks. This afternoon we visit Boughton House, one of the great treasure houses of Europe. Home to the Montagus and their descendants since 1528, the house holds a staggering collection of art, rare furniture, porcelain, weaponry and textiles.
Day 4 Norfolk is our destination as we head east to Kings Lynn, an historic Medieval port situated on the River Great Ouse. Our next visit is to Sandringham, the much-loved country retreat of The Queen, and private home to generations of monarchs since 1862. The house is set in 24 acres of stunning gardens, edged with fields of lavender.
