Day 1 After a morning departure from home, we travel north making suitable refreshment stops along the way. We arrive at our hotel outside Darlington with time to relax before our evening meal.

Day 2 We spend the day at the coast in Whitby, famous for Captain Cook, Dracula and wonderful fish and chips. Our return journey takes us through the North York Moors National Park.

Day 3 Today we visit the famous Beamish Open Air Museum, capturing the spirit of the North East in the 1800s and 1900s.

Day 4 Our first visit today is to Locomotion at Shildon, an outpost of the National Railway Museum with locomotives and artefacts dating back to the birth of the railways. Next through unspoilt scenery to Weardale, in the heart of the Pennines. After a break in Stanhope, we continue along the dale and across the moors to Alston, where we find England’s highest narrow-gauge railway, the South Tynedale, and we enjoy a trip on the line.

Day 5 This morning we travel to Gateshead, on the Tyne, and walk across the Millenium ‘Winking Eye’ bridge into Newcastle’s famous Sunday Quayside Market. In the afternoon we have a cruise on the River Tyne, with expert commentary, and finally we take a ride on the world’s oldest existing railway – The Tanfield Railway.
