Discover the wild beauty of the Trossachs National Park, the grand majesty of the castles at Glamis, Scone and Drumlanrig, the amazing story of Scot’s explorations at Discovery Point in Dundee, all from our base at the four-star Crieff Hydro Hotel.
Day 1 Leaving the local area after our usual pick ups from your front door, we make our way northwards to the Cumbria area for our overnight stay.
Day 2 After breakfast, we continue our journey up into Scotland, crossing the border and travelling via Dumfries to Drumlanrig Castle. Time will be given to visit both the house and gardens of this magical pink 300-year-old castle, and we have an included lunch of soup and sandwiches. We continue our journey to our hotel above Crieff.
Day 3 After a leisurely breakfast, we travel to Perth, where there will be time for shopping and sightseeing. We then visit Scone Palace, the crowning place of Scottish Kings. You will have ample time to discover this unique house and learn stories of Mary Queen of Scots, Marie Antoinette, Robert the Bruce and Charles II. Time will also allow you to visit the ornate gardens and Pinetum. Tonight we enjoy a special Scottish menu!
Day 4 We travel to Dundee and visit Discovery Point where you can see and explore Scot’s Antarctic ship, The Discovery. This is an excellent presentation telling the tale of the most heroic voyage and exploration ever undertaken. If you prefer, next door is V&A Dundee, Scotland’s design museum, which is free to enter (except special exhibitions). We then make our way to Glamis Castle, the childhood home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. After free time for lunch, explore this majestic house and enjoy the tranquil gardens before returning to our hotel.
Day 5 A day of wonderful scenery awaits as we explore the Trossachs, where rugged mountains and their wooded slopes are reflected in the mirror-like waters of the lochs. We travel via Loch Earn and stop in the bustling town of Callander. From here we enter the National Park. We drive along Loch Venachar, passing Brig O’Turk to Lochs Achray and Katrine, where we have a short stop. We take Duke’s Pass, through magnificent wooded scenery to Aberfoyle. Our afternoon stop is the fine city of Stirling, dominated by its castle.
Day 6 Today is a free day in Crieff. You could explore the town, galleries and shops, visit a distillery or in the afternoon take a taxi to gorgeous Drummond Gardens, only 4 miles away (entrances and transport not included, gardens not suitable for the less mobile). Alternatively, stroll in the grounds, or enjoy the leisure facilities at our hotel.
Day 7 Travelling south to Edinburgh, we drop you in the centre for free time. After lunch we continue south across the Pentland Hills and across the border into England and our overnight hotel in the Newcastle/Durham area.
Day 8 We make our way down the Great North Road making several refreshment stops and cross the Thames at Dartford before returning to the south coast.
