This year brings a celebration of 125 years of the Manchester Ship Canal, and this tour includes a sailing along the whole 35-mile length, through spectacular scenery. We also explore the stunning countryside and picturesque villages of the Ribble Valley and Pendle Witch Country, take a train and taste some delicious chocolate.

Itinerary

Day 1 A taxi from home will take you to your tour coach, and then we travel north to Lancashire with suitable refreshment stops along the way.

Day 2 We have a guided tour today through the fascinating area known as Pendle Witch Country, followed by time in the market town of Clitheroe to purchase some lunch. In the afternoon we rejoin our guide and head into the Ribble Valley and the Forest of Bowland, an area of outstanding natural beauty, with panoramic views of the Lancashire countryside.

Day 3 We travel to Salford Quays to board our Mersey Ferries ship for a leisurely six-hour cruise along the whole length of the legendary Manchester Ship Canal. We travel the 35-miles of the canal, enjoying spectacular scenery and a lively commentary along the way, telling the story of how this magnificent waterway shaped the city of Manchester and the North West of England. We pass some spectacular scenery and see some of the region’s most stunning architectural and natural sights. Refreshments and snacks can be purchased on board. We disembark at Pier Head, Liverpool and make our way back to the hotel by coach.

Day 4 After a leisurely breakfast, we travel to Rawtenstall to board the East Lancashire Railway for a journey along the Irwell Valley to Bury. Here we have time to explore the fascinating transport museum and get some refreshments. Our afternoon stop is at the Chocolate House near Blackburn for a demonstration and tasting.

Day 5 Leaving our hotel after breakfast, we make our way southwards, arriving in the local area late afternoon
