We explore the beautiful rolling scenery of the Yorkshire Dales, with visits to Hawes, Thirsk and Ripon, a dinner cruise on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and an iconic journey by train from Settle to Carlisle.
Day 1 A morning collection from your home by taxi before joining our coach for our journey north to West Yorkshire, arriving at our hotel in Skipton late afternoon.
Day 2 Today we journey into the Yorkshire Dales National Park, through the beautiful countryside of the Dales via Grassington and the pretty village of Kettlewell, along Wharfedale and up to the market town of Hawes. In the afternoon we visit the Wensleydale Cheese Visitor Centre for some fruit cake and cheese.
Day 3 Boarding our train at Skipton, we join the famous line which will carry us through Settle and onto Carlisle. Agreed to be one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the country, the line tracks the sparkling River Ribble, through the narrow, wooded valley and up onto the wide, high moors. We travel across the famous 24-arch Ribblehead Viaduct, over Dent Head Viaduct, along Garsdale, over the Moorcock Viaduct, and through Appleby before reaching Carlisle. We return to Skipton by coach.
Day 4 This morning we have a visit to the village of Ilkley and the rest of the day is free to explore Skipton. Tonight we have a delightful three-hour dinner cruise along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, cooked and served by the Rendezvous Hotel’s own staff. You can eat in the restaurant as usual if you prefer.
Day 5 We drive east past Blubberhouses with a stop in Ripon, the unspoilt cathedral city of the Yorkshire Dales. On to Thirsk, where we enter the ‘World of James Herriot’. Based in his original surgery at 23 Kirkgate, the ‘Skeldale House’ of the Herriot books is a unique tribute to the author.
Day 6 Leaving our hotel after breakfast, we make our way southwards via the Cotswolds, reaching the local area late afternoon.
