Day 1 After an early taxi pick up, we travel by coach up to Cumbria, with suitable stops along the way. We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 A day exploring Hadrian’s Wall country accompanied by a local guide, bringing history to life with stories of the people who lived and worked in this remarkable area. First, we visit Vindolanda Fort and Museum, one of Europe’s most important Roman archaeological sites. We continue to Hexham, where you can join the guide for a short tour, visit the abbey or relax and enjoy some shopping. We return to our hotel along Military Road.

Day 3 Venturing across the border into Scotland, we visit the delightful Blacksmith’s Shop at Gretna Green. Explore the Gretna Green Story exhibition, housed within the original blacksmith’s cottage and workshop, and experience a wedding re-enactment. We then visit the award-winning Devil’s Porridge Museum, the largest munitions factory in the world during WWI, where 12,000 women from across Britain did their part for the war effort.

Day 4 Into the Lake District today, beginning with a visit to Keswick. In the afternoon we travel to Glenridding via Troutbeck and enjoy tea and cake at the wonderful Inn on the Lake Hotel, before a one-hour cruise on Lake Ullswater to Pooley Bridge, where we are met by our coach and taken back to our hotel.

Day 5 We travel south to Alston boarding the South Tynedale Railway for a wonderful return ride through the South Tyne Valley. After some free time for lunch, we visit Stanhope before returning to our hotel.

Day 6 Departing after breakfast, we head southwards to the local area, making suitable refreshment stops along the way.

Gilsland Hall Hotel

Set in 140 acres of manicured gardens, Gilsland Hall Hotel offers views of the Cumbrian and Northumberland countryside and is very highly regarded. It has a restaurant, a bar, and free WiFi is available in public areas. Bedrooms are over four floors and have TV, telephone, hairdryer and hospitality tray. The hotel has a lift to some rooms. The hotel offers entertainment in the ballroom every evening!
