Itinerary

Day 1 After an early departure, we travel to Dover for our short sea crossing to Calais. Once in France we drive across country to Amboise in the Loire Region to our hotel where we spend the next five nights.

Day 2 We visit the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, situated where the three regions of Poitou, Anjou and Touraine meet, one of the largest surviving monastic cities from the Middle Ages. Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of France and bride of Henry II, spent the end of her life here and we have a guided tour to discover more of the fascinating history. We then visit Chinon, a pretty medieval town on the River Vienne, with many places to browse and to partake of the delicious local wine.

Day 3 Today we travel to Tours, the regional capital, for free time to explore this delightful town. With its impressive old town by the river, beautiful tree-lined squares and half- timbered houses, narrow winding streets, churches and plenty of shopping, there is lots to enjoy. We then visit the Château du Rivau, where we have an included light lunch and a guided tour. Take the time to explore the wonderful gardens, followed by a tasting of three local wine.

Day 4 A day at leisure in Amboise, where you can relax at the hotel or explore the charming town. Wander the small streets in the centre and marvel at the Troglodyte cave dwellings that have been turned into houses and wine cellars. You might like to visit the Château d’Amboise, the home of French royalty from the 15th to the 19th Centuries (entrance approx. €15pp).

Day 5 We make our way to Chisseaux this morning for a relaxing circular cruise on the River Cher. Admire the flora and fauna as we cruise along, and discover the history of the river, its dams and surrounding vineyards. We get our first view of the impressive château, Chenonceau, from the water. With a dramatic history of intrigue, the château has connections to the French royal family and Catherine de Medici. We have included entrance to the château, with an audio guide, and its wonderful gardens.

Day 6 Leaving our hotel after breakfast, we travel back to Calais, making suitable refreshment stops along the way, and taking a late afternoon ferry to Dover. From here we continue by coach to the local area.
