The Harz Mountains are the land of German fairy tales: steep-roofed houses and narrow cobblestone streets, dark forests, rushing streams and stormy mountains. We explore the wonderful old towns of Wernigerode, Kassel, Hamelin & Goslar, and our hotel is the perfect base for a magical tour of fairytale proportions!
Day 1 An early collection from home to join our coach for the journey to Dover and morning sailing to Calais. We continue to our overnight hotel, arriving in time for our evening meal.
Day 2 Departing after breakfast, we continue into Germany and arrive at the HKK Hotel Wernigerode by late afternoon.
Day 3 We visit Goslar today, capital of the Harz Mountains and enjoy a guided tour of this historic town. Walking through the medieval streets is like stepping back in time. Visit the town hall, featuring some of the most ornate ceiling decorations of the era, watch the animated figures of the town Glockenspiel or venture through the silver mines into the heart of the Rammelsberg Mountain itself.
Day 4 Today you will experience Germany's Fairytale Road and explore the towns made famous by the best-known story tellers of European folktales: the Brothers Grimm. We make our way first to Kassel, a city in a rural setting on the banks of the Fulda. Why not walk along the paths of the Karlsaue Park, visit the art museum or see the Wilhelmshöhe Palace and Gardens? We then continue north along scenic roads to Hamelin, home of the famous Pied Piper. Here you may enjoy a guided walking tour with the Pied Piper himself!
Day 5 After breakfast this morning, you are free to explore the Old Town of Wernigerode at leisure. You could wander down Breite Strasse and admire the stunning wood carvings on the traditional houses, enjoy a coffee in one of the many cafés before perhaps catching the Schloss bus or the 'little train' up the steep incline to Wernigerode Castle. The views from the Castle walls across the Harz Mountains are simply breathtaking and the Castle itself is fairly small but extremely beautiful. Or you may choose to travel on the Harz narrow gauge railway (1.5 hours each way) up to the summit of the highest of the Harz Mountains, the Brocken, for that 'top of the world' experience! The day is really what you make it.
Day 6 Departing Wernigrode after breakfast, we retrace our steps home stopping at our final overnight.
Day 7 We finish the last leg of our return home.
