Here&#8217;s just a few incredible facts that make The Lake District all the more awe-inspiring:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> The Lake District National Park was established in 1951, the second of fifteen national parks in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> The Lake District is home to sixteen different lakes, one of these is Lake Windermere, the largest natural lake in England. It&#8217;s long, narrow body of water stretches over 11 miles. It&#8217;s also three miles long and over half a mile wide.\u00a0In 1895 <em>Windermere<\/em> was completely iced over for 6 weeks, making it possible to walk from one side to the other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> 14.8 million people visit the Lake District every year, and you could be one of them!<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> One of the Lake District\u00b4s most celebrated former residents was poet and author, William Wordsworth, who published his \u00b4Guide to the Lakes\u00b4 in 1810.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> Believe it or not, the Lake District only has one official lake; <em>Bassenthwaite<\/em>, all the others are considered &#8216;Waters&#8217; or<br \/>\n&#8216;Meres.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> The highest mountain of the Lake District is <em>Scafell Pike<\/em> at 978 metres (3210 feet)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-968\" src=\"https:\/\/woodstravel.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/lake-352287_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"lake-352287_960_720.jpg\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>8.<\/strong>\u00a0The National Park includes 26 miles of coastline and estuaries!<\/p>\n<p><strong>9.<\/strong>\u00a0Twelve thousand years ago the area was covered by ice which sculpted the landscape.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10.<\/strong>\u00a0More than 6,000 archaeological sites and monuments are listed, including 5,000-year-old stone circles, Roman roads, and classic country estates.<\/p>\n<p>Like what you see?
